Which wine for Christmas Pud?

A great alternative: Bleasdale’s Sparkling Shiraz from The Wine Society, £10.99

Still richly fruity, with port like flavours, but a tad drier than Wyndham Estate.

Hi I’m Rebecca Dunphy with my choice for plum pudding. Wynham Estate Sparkling Shiraz, just over £10 from Morrissons. It’s rich, ripe and sparkling, with port/licorice-like, prune fruit and a hint of earthiness. The sweet richness matches that of the pud, but the fizzy freshness allows you to indulge in more than one mouthful. It is the most festive of fizz with its deep, inky red colour and rich flavours. This is the most versatile wine of all time – its wonderful with turkey topped with lashings of Cranberry sauce, the sweetness of the sauce and sweet fizz and fruit mix into one. It will even go with honey roast ham,  blue cheese and it’s fantastic with dark chocolate and big cheese. In fact, this is probably the only wine you will need this Christmas.

    My choice would be a sumptuous botrytis dessert wine, such as those from around the Neusiedlersee region in Burgenland, Austria, from where come some of the best dessert wines on the planet. Particularly good are Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese from Josef Lentsch and Heidi Schröck, who also makes some lovely Ruster Ausbruch. German stickies from the Mosel can also be fabulous but Austrian are much better value.

    There’s also the Gratien and Meyer sparkling red alternative from the Loire valley, but it’s not easy to obtain.

    To be honest, I’d rather have Orange Muscat, sweet Madeira, Pedro Ximenez sherry or even Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise to accompany a Christmas pud (especially my puds as they are incredibly alcoholic!)

    I did try a still Californian red dessert wine about 20 years ago (can’t remember what it was called) but it didn’t quite do it for me. Still, I think this sparkling red would go down very well as an aperitif – and I’m sure it would go well with something like meltingly cheesy mushroom and Gruyere pancakes (when we’re all fed up with meat).

      I like it as it is refreshing and Christmas pud is probably one of the richest puddings on the planet. Sweet on sweet can be an overload, however I have some yummy PX so I shall give it go and let you know!
